400-meter track
High jump landing pads
6 starting blocks
Long and triple jump landing pits
Shot put and discus throwing areas
3 shot puts and 3 discuses
6 Batons for relay exchanges
Stopwatches
100 meter tape measures

Unit Objectives

Psychomotor:

  1. Students will be able to demonstrate the basic coordination needed to affect the skills involved in the event that they are participating.
  2. Students will be able to demonstrate the basic footwork and proper balance needed to insure success during a competition.
  3. Students will demonstrate the necessary upper and lower body movements involved in the positioning of ones body during each individual event in which they compete.

Cognitive:

  1. Students will show perceptive behavior in the course of the meet.
  2. Studentswill demonstrate a spatial awareness during the event in which they are participating.
  3. Students will display proper judgment involving the opponents and his teammates.
  4. Students will display proper awareness of the track, the field event areas and the contestants as they participate.

Affective:

  1. Sportsmanship during and after the meet
  2. Students will display the proper attitude toward teammates, opponents and officials
  3. Students will develop respect for the sport and its rules
  4. Students will develop an appreciation for the sport of track.

Scope and Sequence

INSIDE FIELD EVENTS

Day 1 HIGH JUMP
The landing pit
The cross bar
The rules and etiquette of the event
The approach steps and the last 5 steps & the plant foot
Body positioning & orienting before and after the take off
Elevating the center of body mass above the cross bar
The landing
Begin jumping with out a cross bar (watch for last 5 steps And plant foot)

Day 2 Introduce long and triple jump steps
Explain & demonstrate how to establish a starting mark on the runway
Explain and demonstrate how each jump is measured
Explain and demonstrate how to exit the landing pit
Explain & demonstrate the proper foot placement and body position when jumping
Triple jumping steps
Review high jump
Split class into two groups and allow them to practice the two events

Day 3 hurdles
Explain & demonstrate the proper foot placement and body position when jumping
Rules pertaining to the event
Steps to the first hurdle and the # of steps between the hurdles

Day 4 running events starting blocks
Rules pertaining to running events

Day 5 relays baton exchanges
Rules pertaining to relays and exchanges of the baton

Day 6
Practice 3 chosen events rotating as if you were participating in a track meet

Day 7
Practice 3 chosen events rotating as if you were participating in a track meet

Day 8
Practice 3 chosen events rotating as if you were participating in a track meet

Day 9
Practice 3 chosen events rotating as if you were participating in a track meet

Day 10 introduce the shot & discus Rules of the events

Day 11 continue shot and discus

Day 12 student again pick three events and participate as if in a track meet

Day 13
Students pick three events and participate as if in a Track meet

Day 14
Review rules, etiquette in classroom
Final Assessment Piece
Visual assessment of the students as they participate in each event to determine their abilities in achieving the unit objectives.
Written test will access their knowledge of the rules and regulations of each event
